How to Leave a Legacy

Draw up a list of all your possessions, including property and the contents of your house. Decide how you would like to divide these possessions among your family and friends. Then decide if you have anything left over to help your favourite charitable causes in the future.

Contact your solicitor, bank manager or financial advisor and ask him/her to draw up a will. A will can typically cost approximately £100 (plus VAT), but ask for a written estimate of the cost beforehand.

Your professional advisor will draw up accurately what you would like done in the event of your death and will observe the legal requirements.

Choose two people whom you trust to act as your executors. They will be responsible for putting your will into effect after your death.

Three Different Ways of Giving

You can leave a legacy to the Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund in the following three ways (the wording is a suggestion only):

(i) For part of your estate: I give all (or specify a fractional share) of my estate to the Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund of Thomas Clarkson House - Unit 3, The Stableyard, Broomgrove Road, London SW9 9TL (registered charity no. 213766), for its general purposes, with power to spend income and capital, and I direct that the receipt of its Honorary Treasurer or other authorised officer for the time being shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors.

(ii) For a fixed sum. I give free of tax to the Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund of Thomas Clarkson House - Unit 3, The Stableyard, Broomgrove Road, London SW9 9TL (registered charity no. 213766), the sum of £(amount) for its general purposes, and I direct that the receipt of its Honorary Treasurer or other authorised officers for the time being shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors.

(iii) Specific Items. I bequeath free of tax to the Prisoners of Conscience Appeal Fund of Thomas Clarkson House - Unit 3, The Stableyard, Broomgrove Road, London SW9 9TL (registered charity no. 213766), ("the charity") my (clear description of the item(s) to be bequeathed) ("the bequest") for general purposes of the charity and I direct that:
the Charity shall have the full power to sell the Bequest and to apply the proceeds (as to capital and income) for the general purposes of the charity, and that the receipt of the Honorary Treasurer or other authorised officer for the time being shall be a good and sufficient discharge to my Executors.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY MADE A WILL

It is simple to add a codicil. The suggested wording for this is:

I (your name) of (address)

declare this to be a (first or other) codicil to my will dated (date of will) .

Depending on what you wish to leave to the PoC Fund, please use the wording of (i), (ii) or (iii) as above.

In all other respects I confirm my said will and any previous codicils thereto.

You then need to find two witnesses who are not related to you or beneficiaries of your will to be present when you sign the codicil.

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this (date)   of (month)
